Zendaya was born on September 1, 1996, to her parents Claire Stoermer and Kazembe Ajamu Coleman and she is an only child, but she comes from a large extended family that has five older half-siblings. Here, we get to know the family that has been a big influence on this famous actor.

Zendaya’s Parents: Claire Stoermer and Kazembe Ajamu Coleman

Claire Stoermer: Zendaya’s Mother

Claire Stoermer was born on March 24, 1964, in Oakland, California and she is of both German and Scottish descent. Zendaya’s mother was a dedicated teacher who worked at Fruitvale Elementary School in Oakland for more than twenty years and Zendaya attended the school as a child.

Because of Claire’s strong passion for teaching, Zendaya now speaks out in support of schools that do not have enough funding. In a 2016 interview with Teen Vogue, Zendaya expressed how much she appreciated her mother’s effort to provide students with a chance to experience Shakespeare and other elements of nature and how this widened the students’ opportunities for success.

As well as teaching, Claire worked as a house manager at the California Shakespeare Theater, so Zendaya spent time there and got a glimpse of the performing arts at a young age. She also runs Kizzmet Jewellery, a company that focuses on handmade jewelry; Zendaya likes to wear the pieces to help her mother succeed in her entrepreneurial projects.

After divorcing Kazembe in 2016, Claire still nurtures a close bond with her daughter and Kazembe and the three often join forces to support Zendaya in her career.

Kazembe Ajamu Coleman: Zendaya’s Father

When a DNA test proved that Ajamu Coleman’s roots were from Nigeria, Macedonia and Iceland, he decided to legally adopt the name Kazembe Ajamu Coleman. First, he worked as a teacher in Arkansas, but after Zendaya’s career grew, he began managing her full-time.

It is well-known that her father pays close attention to her relationships and Zendaya revealed in a 2016 People interview that her fiancé, Tom Holland, first got Kazembe’s approval before he proposed in December 2024.

Zendaya has five half-siblings from her father’s earlier marriage who are an important part of the family circle. Despite being separated from Claire, Kazembe is a loyal supporter of Zendaya and can be seen with her at red-carpet occasions and sharing her achievements on the internet.

Zendaya has expressed gratitude for his guidance, writing on Instagram in 2016, “Thank you for your unconditional love, your unwavering strength, your protection and your wisdom, even when I think I know everything.”

Zendaya’s Siblings: A Tight-Knit Crew

Her parents have four daughters and two sons together and Zendaya is the youngest of the whole family, born after Katianna, Annabella, Kaylee, Austin and Julien. Although they stay out of the limelight, Zendaya often talks about how much her sisters have influenced her, mainly mentioning her older sister’s impact on her character.

She stated in a 2015 TIME interview that she admires her older sister, who greatly influenced her to become a better person. Once I became an adult, I understood that having a large family of supportive people is very important.

Katianna Stoermer Coleman

Kizzi or Katianna, is Zendaya’s oldest sister and has played a big role in her life. Born in Oakland, California, Katianna now has a husband and two teenaged daughters called Imani and Isys. She does not use public social media and Zendaya looks up to her as someone with a down-to-earth point of view.

Annabella Stoermer Coleman

Zendaya’s sister Annabella has managed to keep her life private and few details are known about her. It’s been suggested that she isn’t any older than Zendaya, although just like her siblings, she tries to stay out of the public spotlight. Though Annabella stays out of the spotlight, she still plays a big role in Zendaya’s close family.

Kaylee Stoermer Coleman

Zendaya’s youngest sibling Kaylee was born on October 4, 2003 and is the family member who is closest to her in age. Until the age of 21, Kaylee has started to join Zendaya at parties, for example, at the 2017 celebration of Michael Jackson’s Scream. Just like her siblings, Zendaya is not active on public social media, but her statements and interviews reveal how close they are.

Austin Stoermer Coleman

Austin, said to be the oldest child, has appeared in a couple of projects, like Weekend King and Pro Town: Greenville. Even so, he keeps his personal life away from the public eye. Many people have gotten confused because Zendaya sometimes considers her assistant Darnell her “brother,” but Austin is not the same person.

Julien Stoermer Coleman

Julien, also called “EZ,” has three kids and is married to Sonja; Ezenia, known as “Zink,” is older by a year than Zendaya. Both Zink and Zendaya are close friends and in 2014 they did a Teen Vogue video together called “Zendaya and Zink Play Besties Word Association.” Just like his siblings, Julien is not much in the public eye, though Zendaya frequently expresses how much she cares about them in her interviews.

Latonja Coleman: A Note on Estrangement

As well as the siblings, Kazembe has a daughter called Latonja Coleman, born to his high school sweetheart Michelle Mackintosh. Latonja, 51, born in 1973, stated in a recent 2025 US Sun interview that she has only seen Zendaya up close on a few occasions in the last seven years and their relationship seems strained. Her statement after their grandmother’s funeral in January 2025 was that their last encounter made her feel treated “like a fan.”

Latonja showed her happiness for Zendaya’s achievements and her marriage to Tom Holland, although she feels it’s unlikely she’ll be there for the wedding. Still, Claire Stoermer says that Zendaya is very close to her siblings, including Latonja and that family dynamics can be difficult at times.

A Family of Nieces and Nephews

The presence of several nieces and nephews among Zendaya’s siblings has helped her create a huge family. She often mentions that she treats them as her “borrowed children,” as she likes being with them until they go back to their families.

While speaking in an interview, she clarified, “I am very close to many different little nieces and nephews.” As a result, they become my substitute children. The connection between Zink and her aunt is close and you can see this in the two women’s work together such as in the Teen Vogue video.

She made it a point to take her nephews to the 2017 Spider-Man: Homecoming premiere and her niece to the 2017 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards which proved her strong bond as an aunt.

A Grounded Foundation

Even with all that fame brings, Zendaya’s family is always a key part of her existence. Because of her parents’ commitment to academic and arts learning and the approval of her family members, she has stayed centered and true to herself.

While getting ready for Dune: Messiah and Spider-Man 4 and soon becoming Mrs. Holland, Zendaya takes comfort from the values she learned from her large family. The role of family ties is clear from the way she dealt with the pressures of being a star.

Conclusion

Zendaya’s family has played an important role in making her mature, successful and well-balanced. Not only did her parents encourage her, but also her older siblings have played a role in shaping who she is. Even though fame is not easy, Zendaya still keeps her roots close and often thanks her family for the importance they’ve given her life.
